About this policy
This policy covers the Taxomate website (taxomate.com). Taxomate, Inc. runs the site. It explains which cookies and similar tools (such as local storage) the site uses, and how you control them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal data in general.
Taxomate, Inc., 333 West Brown Deer Road, Unit G - 956, Milwaukee, WI 53217, United States. Email: support@taxomate.com.
How we ask for your consent
The site uses a consent banner that we host ourselves. It is built on the open-source tool vanilla-cookieconsent. The banner stores your choice in a first-party cookie, so we do not need an outside consent service.
What the banner does depends on where you are. We use a short-lived cookie to know your country group, so the site can tell whether to ask for consent.
- European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Analytics and the support widget stay off until you accept them. Advertising measurement stays off until you choose it.
- Everywhere else. Analytics and the support widget load by default. You can turn them off at any time with the "Cookie preferences" link in the site footer. Advertising measurement stays off until you choose it.
- Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out of analytics and the support widget. Advertising measurement stays off.
We also send Google Consent Mode v2 signals. Analytics storage follows your analytics choice and regional default. Advertising storage and ad user data stay denied until you choose advertising measurement. A Global Privacy Control signal keeps advertising measurement off. Ad personalization is always denied.
Change or withdraw your choice
Select "Cookie preferences" in the footer of any page. You can change your choice or withdraw consent at any time. Turning a category off stops it from loading on later page views.
You can also use your browser settings to see, block, or delete cookies. Browser settings do not let you choose by category, so blocking everything may break parts of the site.
Cookies and storage we use
Necessary (always on)
The site needs these to remember your consent choice. They do not track you. You cannot turn them off.
| Name | Set by | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
cc_cookie | Taxomate (first party) | Stores your cookie choices. | 6 months |
tx_region | Taxomate (first party) | Stores your country group, so the site knows whether to ask for consent. | 1 day |
Analytics
These help us see how people use the site and which pages and calls to action work. The tools run only if analytics is allowed (see above).
| Name | Set by | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) | Tells visitors apart. | 2 years |
_ga_* | Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) | Keeps session state. | 2 years |
ph_ + our PostHog project key + _posthog (cookie) | PostHog (first party, on taxomate.com and its subdomains) | Holds a random visitor ID, the current session, and the first page you landed on and the page that sent you (with campaign tags only, no other query details). We use it to join your visits to the site and to the Taxomate app. | 1 year |
Items whose names start with ph_ (local and session storage) | PostHog | The same visitor ID and session details, stored in your browser. | Until you clear them, or until you turn analytics off |
taxomate_paid_acquisition (local storage) | Taxomate (first party) | Remembers the ad or campaign that brought you here, so we can pass it to sign-up. | 30 days |
Google Analytics 4 reports to us about how the site is used. Google says it uses IP addresses when it collects data and then discards them before they are logged. Read Google's own pages for details.
PostHog records which pages you view and a session replay: a recording of how you scroll, click and move through our pages. Anything you type into a form is hidden in the replay. The support chat and our free calculators are not recorded. We do not send your name or email to PostHog from the site. If you then sign up, the Taxomate app uses the same visitor ID, so we can see which pages led to the sign-up. If you already use the Taxomate app in this browser, your later visits to the site are joined to your Taxomate account in PostHog.
Our own attribution storage saves some details in your browser's local storage:
- campaign tags in the page address (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term, and utm_id);
- ad click IDs (gclid, gbraid, wbraid, and msclkid);
- the address of the page where you landed and the page that sent you, without any query string;
- the time we saved it.
We delete this record after 30 days. If local storage is not available, we keep it for the current browser tab only. If you turn analytics off, we remove the record. When you go to sign up, we add these details to the sign-up link so we know which campaign worked.
When analytics is on, a small script also sends events to Google Analytics and PostHog. The events are: a click on a sign-up link, the start of a form, a view of the pricing page, a finished use of a tool (the Etsy fee calculator), and a download of the chart of accounts template. These events use no cookies beyond the ones listed above.
Advertising measurement
If you choose advertising measurement, we can pass an ad click ID with your sign-up. When Taxomate confirms a trial or the first subscription payment, our server can send that event and click ID to Google Ads to measure the ad. We do not send your email or phone number for this measurement. Ad personalization stays off. If analytics is off, we remove saved campaign attribution and do not pass it to sign-up. If advertising measurement is off, we do not send the attribution to Google Ads.
Support widget
The site shows a feedback and support widget from Gleap. It loads from Gleap's servers (sdk.gleap.io). It runs only if the support widget is allowed (see above).
Gleap stores these items in your browser while the support widget is allowed:
| Name | Set by | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
session- + our Gleap site key (cookie) | Gleap (first party, on taxomate.com and its subdomains) | Keeps your support chat session, so a conversation continues across pages and Taxomate subdomains. It holds a Gleap visitor ID, plus your name and email if you give them in the chat. | 1 year |
gleap-widget-session- + site key (local storage) | Gleap | The same chat session, stored in your browser. | Until you clear it |
gleap-widget-config- + site key and language (local storage) | Gleap | Caches the widget's settings so it loads faster. | Until you clear it |
gleap-tour-data (local storage) | Gleap | Remembers where you are in a product tour, if one is shown. | Until you clear it |
Third parties
Google and Gleap set and read their own cookies. We do not control them. Their lifetimes can change. Their own privacy policies give the latest details. Google Analytics and Gleap process data in the United States and possibly other countries. See our privacy policy for more.
Interest-based advertising
You can opt out of interest-based advertising across many ad companies through YourOnlineChoices (EU and UK), the Network Advertising Initiative (US), or the Digital Advertising Alliance (US). These tools work in addition to our footer link.
If you say no
You can use the site if you decline analytics and the support widget. Without the widget, you will not see the in-page support chat; you can still email us. Without analytics, we learn less about what works on the site.
Changes
We may update this policy when our cookies change. We post the new version here and change the date at the top.
